The break of real-world dawn seemed to come early, Cakes having joined the trio for physical training. He was making good progress with his mastery of the Warden class, but was finding the same valley that Elrin hit between First and Second Mark. Solace was the only member not washing off the sweat and dust in the fountain. The rest of the group stripped down to cleanse themselves of the layer of grime, joining in the azure flame’s time-honored tradition.

Mochi’s giggles came from afar, joined by a wolf-whistle as she bounded across the central square. She regarded the group and laughed. “That’s a sight.”

“You sweat a lot once you’ve accepted the advanced class,” Zeal said.

“Good, I don’t want you stinking up the empty president’s office,” Mochi said, her attention turning to Elrin. She gestured to his chest and grimaced. “You still have that scar.”

Elrin looked down, finding the pink streak left by the orcish commander. He ran his fingers over the mark. “Right. This wasn’t from after I accepted the advanced class. This is a consequence of being trapped in the game.”

“Don’t die. Got it,” Solace said, waving a dismissive hand.

“Anyway, Pibam is underground and Meya is indisposed. Cakes, I’d like you to join the meeting today. Solace is welcome, too. We’re about all there is of the command structure.”

Solace shrugged in indifference.

They assembled in the president’s office, still empty as expected, and settled into plush armchairs. Elrin relayed his plans regarding the ballista’s placement, and Mochi promised to provide only the best locations when she had the chance. The group settled on the topic of Kuzan, concluding that it would be impossible for them to determine what the elf was up to until it was too late.

When the buzz of conversation in the room settled, Elrin felt a familiar twinge in the back of his mind. Without extending his flames, he could feel a presence lurking in the shadows, a nook where the light from the window couldn’t shine. Without turning his head he said, “whichever assassin you are, show yourself.”

The group turned a concerned look toward him before jumping out of their seats. Twist emerged from a coil of darkness, followed by Ko, Shi, and Tak. The elf affected a low bow, scanning his masked face across the room. “So sorry to interrupt.”

“You may as well have a seat,” Elrin said, gesturing to the corner of the room where sat several chairs.

Twist dragged four chairs, completing a semi-circle of those assembled. The hara’nass arrayed themselves close to Elrin, Twist, finding a seat near Zeal. A long silence hung in the air before anyone thought to talk.

“I’d like to introduce everyone to Ko and his companions, Shi and Tak. Ko was the first NPC I gave self-awareness to. He’s been working to gather information on Kuzan. The masked elf is—”

Twist gestured widely, interrupting Elrin. “Twist. Aspirant of Shadow. Assassin.”

“Nice to meet you,” Mochi said.

“Likewise.”

“Twist has been showing us the way, azure flame,” Ko said after a while.
